The global power and energy storage battery market is in the midst of a fierce battle, led by Chinese companies, and the market landscape is undergoing profound changes.
The latest data from South Korea's SNE Research shows that global (power + energy storage) battery shipments will total nearly 1.3TWh in 2024, reaching 1,299GWh, up 24% year-on-year.
In the global (power + energy storage) battery shipments Top 10 in 2024, 6 Chinese battery companies on the list, respectively CATL, BYD, EVE Energy, CALB, Gotion and Sunwoda; and LG Energy Solution, SamsungSDI and SK On the 3 South Korean companies, and there are also 3 Korean companies, LG Energy Solution, SamsungSDI and SK On, and 1 Japanese company, Panasonic, on the list.
It ranked first, with shipments reaching 491GWh, up 29% year-on-year, and a market share of 38%, up 2 percentage points year-on-year.
According to the disclosure, as of year-end 2024, CATL's automotive customers mainly include BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, Volkswagen, Ford, Toyota, Hyundai, Honda, Volvo, SAIC, Geely, NIO, Li Auto, Yutong, Xiaomi Auto, and other automobile companies.
Energy storage customers and partners mainly include China Energy, China Huaneng Group, China Huadian Corporation, China National Petroleum Corporation, NextEra, Synergy, Wrtsil, NextEra, Synergy, Wrtsil, Excelsior, Jupiter Power, Flexgen and other companies.
It ranked second with shipments of 192GWh, up 22% year-on-year, and a market share of 15%. Its shipments further widened the gap with LG ENERGY SOLUTION, which ranked third, from 20GWh higher than the latter in 2023 to 64GWh in 2024.
In the power field, BYD will be the global champion of new energy vehicle sales in 2024, driving its power battery shipments to continue to grow. In the energy storage sector, its customers include State Grid Corporation of China, State Power Investment Corporation, China General Nuclear Power Group, China Huadian Corporation, SMS, NextEra, Terra-Gen and other domestic and international companies. In February this year, BYD Energy Storage also signed a 12.5GWh energy storage project contract with Saudi Electricity Company.
LG Energy Solution ranked third, with shipments of 128GWh, down 7% year-on-year, and a market share of 10%, down 3 percentage points year-on-year.
According to the information, LG Energy Solution's top five automotive customers are Volkswagen, Tesla, GM, Hyundai and Volvo. its energy storage business focuses on North America and other markets, and its main customers include Excelsior, Terra-Gen and other companies.
It ranked 4th with shipments of 68GWh, a high increase of 62% year-on-year, and a market share of 5%, an increase of 1 percentage point year-on-year. Its ranking rose 2 places from last year.
EVE Energy adheres to the diversified battery technology route and has laid out multiple production bases in China and abroad. Its Malaysia base has been put into production recently, its Hungary base is under construction, and it is also building a lithium iron phosphate joint venture plant in North America with a U.S. customer.
In the power battery business, EVE Energy has deep cooperation with GAC, Xpeng Motors, SANY Group, Geely, BMW and many other automobile companies.
In the energy storage battery business, EVE Energy has deep cooperation with State Grid Corporation of China, China Southern Power Grid, China Huadian Corporation, State Power Investment Corporation, Powin, ABS and many other enterprises. On February 7, EVE Energy signed a contract with HyperStrong for the supply of batteries for a total of 50GWh from 2025 to 2027.
It ranked fifth with shipments of 64GWh, up 52% year-on-year, and a market share of about 5%, up 1 percentage point year-on-year. Compared with 2023, its ranking also rose 2 places compared with last year.
Data from the Power Battery Application Sub-Committee shows that CALB's supporting car companies in 2024 mainly include GAC, Xpeng Motors, NIO, Geely, and SAIC. In the energy storage business, it has formed deep cooperation with SUNGROW and other enterprises.
Ranked 6th with shipment volume of 50GWh, a high increase of 61% YoY, market share of about 4%, an increase of 1 percentage point year-on-year, and ranking up 3 places year-on-year.
In the power sector, customers include Geely, SAIC, TATA, VinFast, Rivian and others. In the energy storage field, Gotion has relevant cooperation with State Grid Corporation of China, China Huadian Corporation, HUAWEI, PGT, Pod Point, and Daiwa Energy.
It ranked 7th with shipments of 48GWh, down more than 17% year-on-year, and market share of about 4%, down 2 percentage points year-on-year, and ranked 3 places year-on-year.
Its automotive customers mainly include Stellantis, Ford, BMW, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Rivian, Lucid and others.
It ranked eighth, with shipment volume of 42GWh, a slight increase of 2% year-on-year, and market share of about 3%, 
a decrease of 1 percentage point year-on-year, and its ranking remained unchanged year-on-year.
As for customers, Panasonic mainly supplies Tesla with its cylindrical batteries.
It ranked ninth, with shipments of 31GWh, down a whopping 46% year-on-year, and a market share of about 2%, a decrease of 3 percentage points year-on-year. Compared with the previous year, its ranking dropped four places.
It has a high concentration of automotive customers, mainly Ford, Hyundai, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and so on.
It ranked 10th, with shipment volume of 22GWh, up 47% year-on-year, and market share of about 2%,
up 1 percentage point year-on-year.
According to the data, Sunwoda's power battery has been ordered by a number of automobile enterprises, including Volkswagen, Volvo, Nissan, Li Auto, SAIC, Geely and so on.
