Hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) is an organosilicon compound with the chemical formula C₆H₁₈OSi₂ and structural formula (CH₃)₃Si-O-Si(CH₃)₃. Its physical properties exhibit a colorless transparent liquid with volatility, a boiling point of about 101°C, a density of 0.76 g/cm³ (20°C), and a refractive index of 1.377 (20°C). These properties make it easy to use as a solvent or carrier in industry.
The compound is chemically stable and insensitive to heat under conventional conditions, but is susceptible to hydrolysis to form hexamethyldisilanol in strong acid or base environments. The Si-O-Si bond in its core structure confers reactivity and can be used as a siloxane intermediate in condensation reactions for the synthesis of more complex siloxane polymers or functional materials

Semiconductor manufacturing: Used as a volatile solvent for wafer cleaning and photoresist removal, its low surface tension and high volatility can avoid residue, while forming insulating or hydrophobic films through chemical vapor deposition (CVD) to enhance device performance.
Functional Coatings: Forming a nanoscale hydrophobic layer on the surface of the material, it is used in automotive glass, moisture-proofing of electronic components and waterproofing treatment of textiles, and achieves long-lasting protection by bonding to the substrate through Si-O-Si bonds.
Cosmetics and Laboratory: As volatile silicone oil in cosmetics, it gives skin care products a refreshing skin feel without leaving an oily film; in the laboratory, it serves as an inert reaction medium or carrier gas for gas chromatography analysis, taking advantage of its chemical stability and low-polarity characteristics.
